Rescues are organizations with the goal of helping unwanted bassets find permanent homes. They are operated by volunteers dedicated to the welfare of the breed who find new homes for abandoned and relinquished basset hounds.

Unfortunately there is a great need. Reasons for relinquishment are numerous! A change in lifestyle or a move to a situation where a pet is not allowed to name just two. The rescued dogs may have been strays with unfound owners, from pounds/shelters or relinquished by their owners who no longer wanted them.  Most rescues have the dogs examined by a veterinarian, have the dogs' shots updated, spay/neuter if not already done and treat any medical conditions they may find present. The dogs are placed into private "foster" homes where they become members of the family until a permanent "forever home" is located.

Those persons interested in adopting a basset will be typically asked to go through an application process which will help determine if adoption is appropriate. It can be a long process. The Daily Drool Rescue Info Page sums this process up:

"Basset Rescues are very careful about the homes selected for their dogs. We have the welfare of the bassets in mind, first and foremost. These dogs have already lost the security of their original homes and some have been either abused, abandoned, or neglected. We need to place them is stable homes where they will be allowed to live out the rest of their lives being loved and well-cared for. Being shifted from one home to another, or worse yet, to a pound/shelter is confusing and can be traumatic to the dog. This can cause severe behavior problems, especially separation anxiety. Also, many of these dogs do not cope well with the quick unpredictable movements of small children. For these reasons, we look for homes where there isn't a lot of stress."

Do you think you are ready for a Basset hound?

It is important to carefully consider everything before adding a basset to your family. Are you aware of their characteristics? Do you know what health issues bassets may face? Are you willing to train? Where will you get your basset? BuckBasset has important information available to help you with this decision.  Please take some time to review this information. For a successful match between dog and owner it is important to truly know the breed you are interested in.

Can you help?

Every Basset rescue is in need of assistance in one form or another. If you would like to help please check your local rescue and let them know! Here are just a few of the ways you can be involved in Basset rescue:

Adoption - the number one way of helping out a rescue.

Fostering - individuals or families who have agreed to open their home and their hearts in order to provide a safe and loving environment for these dogs until a permanent home can be found.

Transportation - Often times a dog that is being relinquished needs to travel a distance to get to their new foster home...sometimes it is a lucky hound on his way to his forever home. There is also the need to get hounds to and from vet appointments.

Supplies - There is always a need for supplies. Could you donate:  collars, leashes, dog food, bowls, toys, crates, etc.? Contact your local rescue to let them know you would like to help!

Monetary Donations - Basset (and other breed) rescues are run by volunteers. There are adoption fees but these just begin to cover the medical and other cost incurred by the rescue when taking in a relinquished dog. Many times fees are paid by the rescue's volunteers themselves. All rescues accept donations and most of them are tax deductible. Contact the rescue for more information!

Administrative - including advertising, correspondence and marketing.

Transport Needs

In need of help with a transport for a rescue dog? Here is a list of organizations available to assist!

Basset Hound Rescue Relay - This Yahoo group was established to work in collaboration with all of our nationwide Basset Hound Rescue organizations within the USA.

I-MOMM express - list is a volunteer transport list setup to assist with transport of rescue and/or shelter animals that need to get to their new homes. Our main purpose will be for the transportation of special needs, older and/or abused animals-however we will never turn away any animal that needs to get somewhere.

PacWest Dog Cooperative - A forum for dog rescuers to request and coordinate shelter pulls, foster-care, home visits and transport within California, Oregon, Washington and B.C. regions. We have received such a response from people who want to help with this type of rescue work, that we now have folks with all sorts of vehicles participating: Big Trucks, R.V.'s, vans, pickups, SUVs and plain old automobiles. Our main goal is to deliver rescued dogs, cats and other pets to their new homes anywhere in the U.S.A. and Canada.
